Participation in the International Conference on Aquaculture 2024, Phu Quoc, Vietnam

The “Improving Farmed Fish Welfare in Asia” project was given a high profile in the recent “International Conference on Aquaculture 2024, which was held in Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam in October 2024. The project had an exhibition stand and Institute of Aquaculture staff and some of our project partners presented their research relating to aquatic animal welfare. This included a talk by Prof. Sonia Rey Planellas on AI-powered real-time automated behavioural monitoring in salmon farms to predict gill health and other potential welfare issues. Prof. Sunil Kadri, from Charles Darwin University in Australia who is collaborating with two of our funded research projects in Vietnam gave a presentation on welfare scoring for whole fish populations based on behavioural, environmental and production data, again using artificial inteligence. Other colleagues and collaborators presenting included Prof. Amaya Albalat, Prof. Mags Crumlish, and Prof. Surintorn Boonanuntanasarn.
