With support from Open Philanthropy, FAI Farms has developed a Tilapia Welfare App which will be launched in 2023.

The App is designed for farmers to use during daily husbandry activities. The aim is to help farmers improve production processes leading to better fish welfare and greater productivity. The App is based on research carried out in Thailand, Brazil and China to develop a practical and scientifically-based welfare assessment process. It is based on a 3-point scoring system across four categories of indicators: Health, environment, nutrition and behaviour as shown in the graphic below. Data collected by the App can be used directly by the farmer and could also be used to demonstrate best practice to other value chain companies.
