SAFE Project - Starting work on Polish carp farming
In September 2023, John Bostock and Wesley Malcorps, researchers on the Horizon Europe “SmartAqua4FuturE” (SAFE) project, visited Poland to start working with Polish Partners, The West Pomeranian University of Technology (ZUT) to study carp production systems and value chains. This included attending and making a presentation at the national carp farmers conference “Karpiówka” about the project and plans for conducting Lifecycle Analysis and modelling the financial implications for adopting circular economy innovations.
Developments and innovations in the Polish carp farming sector were explored with Anna Pyć, owner of the carp farm, shop and restaurant PSTRĄG PUSTELNIA, who was named as Fishfarmer of the Year at the conference, and is also Vice President of the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP). Of particular interest was the potential for developing more detailed Lifecycle Assessments for carp production in Poland.
A visit was also made to the “Ińskie Centrum Rybactwa” farm in Maliniec to help assemble gas sampling chambers and view the facilities where various research activities under the SAFE project will be carried out, and to the West Pomeranian University of Technology laboratories.
Out thanks particularly to Piotr Eljasik, Remigiusz Panicz and Sławomir Lisiecki for facilitating and hosting the visit.
